Expanding the railways: New guide launched

5 July 2017

A new guide, Expanding the Railways, is being launched today by Campaign for Better Transport and Railfuture.

Expanding the Railways will help local authorities, developers and communities develop plans for adding new stations and lines to the network.

Bringing new rail infrastructure online is complex and requires clear objectives, good planning and a strong business case. This new guide aims to help local communities and others navigate the process.

Stephen Joseph, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said:

"Not so long ago, rail policy was about closing lines and stations. Now there is an all-party consensus that the rail network needs to be extended, rather than cut back. There have already been several successful projects that have opened new or former lines and stations and our new guide will help councils and communities who want to develop their own ideas for extending the railway network."

Chris Page, Chair, Railfuture, said:

“Railfuture is happy to have helped produce this practical guide based on our experience around the country campaigning for the expansion of the railway over many years.  It should help us to make the case for our top priorities over the next few years.”

The guide was produced with support from the Department for Transport. Paul Maynard, Rail Minister, Department for Transport, said:

“It is vital that local communities are able to help shape the future of the country’s rail investment. I am therefore delighted to support this new guide by Campaign for Better Transport and Rail Future which helps communities understand how to make the case for rail projects that put passengers first.

“The Government and the whole rail industry are working hard to deliver the biggest rail modernisation programme for over a century. We are investing in better trains, more seats, faster and more reliable journeys, improved stations, and easier ways to purchase tickets and access information. Through this new guide, Campaign for Better Transport and Rail Future are helping to put local communities at the heart of this historic upgrade.”
