The petition read as follows:

To the Coalition Government,

  • Affordable public transport is vital – don’t raise train fares by another 28%
  • Don’t price people off the train and out of work
  • Listen to the voices of passengers – not just train companies – when you review your fare policy
  • Reconsider your decision to raise fares 3% above inflation now that inflation is far higher than expected
  • Keep your promise to make fares fair

Not everything in life is about profit. Public transport provides vital services to society, especially to those sectors of it who either cannot afford a choice or choose the greener way to travel; and surely these services are its primary function, not profits? Let's make sure that at least those in "transport poverty" are not further penalised; even better, let's reform public transport and redesign how it is run to get us out of the death spiral of overcrowded yet costly trains!

Train fares are too high for the service provided. More and more people are needing to use public transport due to rising costs in fuel and taxes. Fuel poverty is already recognised, perhaps it is about time transport poverty was mentioned!!

We want affordable train fares. These increases should not go ahead, the cost of living is high enough these days.

Please don't penalise those of us who use public transport, as the Govt appears to wish us to. Why should commuters have to subsidise casual travellers? Is it reasonable that I pay £3,640 per year already (thanks to my company's season ticket loan policy) only for this to rise to over £4,000 next year? My salary will NOT rise in line with this.
