How to reduce food miles

Agriculture and food now account for nearly 30% of goods transported on our roads, due in part to centralised distribution systems and also to the fact that we eat a lot of imported food. And, we add to food miles when we drive to the shops to get that food.

But you can reduce your food miles:

  • Buy local food and food that’s in season
  • Buy food from your local greengrocer's, butcher's and fishmonger's
  • Write to the supermarket and ask it to transport its goods by train instead of lorries. (Find out more on the Freight on Rail website)
  • Visit your local farmers' market
  • Read our Wise Moves report and summary, which outline what food miles are, how to reduce them and what the positive consequences of so doing might be.
