Payroll giving is a donation to the charity of your choice, direct from your salary. You decide how much you want to give and your employer deducts this amount from your pay.
Not all employers operate a payroll giving scheme so you’ll first need to check that you are able to donate in this way.
The advantage of payroll giving is that it’s tax-free - every £1 you give actually costs you only 78p - the tax man pays the remaining 22p. This is because your employer deducts your donation before calculating your tax.
"My employer operates the payroll giving scheme, whereby regular donations by employees to registered charities can be made tax effectively. All I needed to do was complete a short form. Under the arrangement my monthly donation comes out of my pre-tax salary. This means that for every, say, £10 given by a donor the real cost to him/her is either £7.80 (for a 22% taxpayer) or £6 (for a 40% taxpayer). See if your employer operates payroll giving and then set up regular tax efficient donations!" - Paul Worrall, Campaign for Better Transport supporter.
