The White Horse Alliance is an umbrella organisation for local people and environmental groups who are campaigning to preserve the countryside around Westbury in Wiltshire, and who oppose a road in the Wellhead Valley, at the foot of the Westbury White Horse.
Wiltshire Council wants to create a 'strategic route' between the south coast and the M4 motorway, defying the regional strategy and rejecting transport solutions which reduce traffic and pollution. The Council's desires have largely focused on the A350 corridor with its lead project for the last 10 years being the Westbury Eastern Bypass. Following a major campaign, this scheme was subject to public inquiry in 2008 which resulted in its complete defeat in 2009. The recalcitrant Wiltshire Council persists in pursuing the Westbury Bypass ‘project’ and talks in terms of resurrecting it as a developer-led build in conjunction with housing and other development. There is very little chance of this scheme being resurrected by any such means as the Planning Inspectorate ruled against it so decisively. But Wiltshire still persists with its road ambitions elsewhere on the corridor (ACA – A36/A350 Corridor Alliance has more information).

July 2009: The road has been stopped! On 2 July, the road was refused planning permission.
February 2009: We urgently need money to continue our fight against the bypass. The year of peak oil and peak food is not the time to be building in more oil dependency – building more roads, paving over more farmland, endangering already rare wildlife, or encouraging more traffic, more out-of-town sprawl, more food-miles. I hope you will feel that this is a battle worth supporting.

The inquiry start date has now been postponed to 17 June 2008.
