Responding to the letter sent to the Chancellor by the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, Campaign for Better Transport has added its voice to the call for investment in rail infrastructure to deliver much needed jobs, investment and growth in the North of England.
As well as this, the Government must give real powers over the operation of the North's rail network to Transport for the North. Steve Chambers, Public Transport Campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport, said:
"Northern leaders have been unable to ameliorate the misery on the rail network because all real power is held by the Department for Transport.
"Rail devolution works, as evidenced by the strong performance and customer satisfaction seen on the London Overground and Merseyrail. But our country's railways are still massively centralised. The Government must give real control over rail to Transport for the North, so that franchise holders can be held properly to account and future meltdowns can be avoided."
