Fifty years after the Beeching Report led to the closure of 5,000 miles of rail track, rail travel is more popular than at any point since Victorian times. Yet, despite hundreds of reopenings being proposed, few reach construction, due in part to the lack of national oversight with identifying and promoting projects currently left to local authorities and investors.

But this year's average fare rise of 3.1 per cent (3.2 per cent for season tickets) will have left many passengers wondering what on earth they are paying for after a record year for delays, cancellations and overcrowding.

A new independent rail ombudsman has been launched to intervene when passengers feel let down by train companies. We welcomed its introduction because we know that far too often passengers don’t feel their complaints against rail companies are resolved satisfactorily, but until now there was no way to appeal the train company’s decision.
