A tribute to John Hartley, Devon transport campaigner

Sian Berry's picture

19 October: We were very sad to hear that John Hartley, Chair of Campaign for Better Transport Devon, died on Monday night.

Kingskerswell ChurchJohn Hartley was a tireless and extremely dedicated campaigner for better transport policies in Devon, and for the countryside of Devon. Living in the beautiful village of Kingskerswell, John was especially involved in the campaign against the South Devon Link Road (Kingskerswell Bypass). Recently John was part of a delegation that met with minister Norman Baker to discuss the bypass. John was also very involved in campaigns for reopening the Exeter to Plymouth rail line, and other planning and transport issues as he was also Chair of the Teignbridge & Torbay branch of CPRE Devon.

John was a really principled person and could never be ignored! He will be greatly missed.

The photo above shows St Mary's church, Kingskerswell, where John's funeral will be held next week. The Kingskerswell Bypass, which John strongly opposed, will pass right by the church through the ridgeway in the background.
