Responding to the Department for Transport's announcement of trials of single-leg fares on LNER services from London to Leeds, Newcastle, and Edinburgh, Darren Shirley, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said:
"This trial is a welcome step towards fairer, simpler, more transparent ticketing. Single-leg pricing could make it easier for passengers to choose the most appropriate ticket for their journey and improve confidence that they are getting a good deal, but only if this is not used as a means to push up fares further."

Notes to editors
At present, return tickets often cost just fractionally more than single tickets. Under the trial, each leg of a journey will be priced separately, with the price of a single-leg ticket more in line with half the price of a return journey. The Department for Transport's announcement can be read online.
