Campaigners call for increased transparency for £1bn Growth Deals

29 January 2015

Campaign for Better Transport has responded to the Government's confirmation of £1bn of funding for Growth Deals in 2015/16.

Sian Berry, Sustainable Transport Campaigner, Campaign for Better Transport said

"Far too much about the Growth Fund goes on behind closed doors and without local people being involved. Government is giving Local Economic Partnerships a huge amount of money and power, but last year only just over half of them ran any form of public consultation on their spending plans. The Government must do more to ensure the Growth Fund genuinely goes on community priorities, and not just the narrow interests of the Enterprise Partnerships."

Notes

1. The Government has today confirmed £1bn of funding for local Growth Deals.

2. In June 2014, research into the Local Enterprise Partnerships Strategic Economic Plans (SEPs) by Campaign for Better Transport and Sustrans found that the transparency of the SEP process was poor. Only 66 per cent of LEPs made their draft SEPs open to public scrutiny prior to final SEP submittal to government on the 31st March. Only 54 per cent ran a form of public consultation either via an online survey, email or event
