Campaign for Better Transport has responded to the extension of the West Coast Mainline rail franchise
James MacColl, Campaigns Director, Campaign for Better Transport said
"It's good sense for Virgin to convert lightly used first class carriages to standard class, and other operators should take similar steps to ease overcrowding. It is, however, only a sticking plaster. Investment in West Coast is good news, but other parts of the network are still putting up with badly outdated 30 year old rolling stock. Government needs a coherent, long term, strategy for increasing passenger numbers whilst reducing fares so all passengers see better and more affordable services."
