Campaigners respond to Network Rail review

16 March 2016
Campaign for Better Transport has welcomed the outcome of Nicola Shaw's review of Network Rail's future funding and structure, which has been published alongside the Budget statement.

The charity has called on the Government to implement the review's findings while resisting any further fragmentation of the railways.

Stephen Joseph, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said:

“Nicola Shaw has made it clear the Government should resist calls to break up or privatise Network Rail. In making her recommendations, she has listened to Campaign for Better Transport and others and put forward positive reforms which will strengthen the voice of passengers, encourage investment and help the railways grow.

"Shaw is also clear on the need for longer term planning and greater devolution. This would make the railways much more responsive to the communities they serve, while helping simplify the sometimes confused relationship between Network Rail, the Department for Transport and the regulator.

"The Shaw Review should mark a positive end to a difficult year for Network Rail. We urge the Government to make it clear they will implement the report's recommendations in full."
