Campaigners respond to Southern rail franchise extension

Campaign for Better Transport has responded to the announcement by the Department for Transport to extend the Southeastern rail franchise until June 2018.

Martin Abrams, Public Transport Campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport said

"Today's announcement comes with a welcome promise of service improvements, but the fact remains that Southeastern have been given a four-year extension despite having more dissatisfied passengers than anywhere else on the network. Passengers deserve more clarity in how decisions are being made and should have a bigger say in who runs their trains."



1. On 11 September, the Department for Transport announced its intention to extend the Southeastern rail franchise until June 2018.

2. Passenger Focus's most recent National Rail Passenger Survey shows 12 per cent of Southeastern's passengers rating the franchise performance as 'poor'. This is the highest rate of dissatisfaction among the 23 franchise operators.

3. The franchise extension is the 7th given by the Department for Transport since the Brown reivew of Rail Franchising, published in January 2013
