Responding to the Transport Select Committee's report, Local roads funding and maintenance: filling the gap, Darren Shirley, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said:
"Drivers consistently rank the poor condition of local roads as their top concern. Rather than focusing on building big new roads, Government should adopt a 'fix it first' approach to keep local roads in good condition. This is the best and most cost effective way of stopping problems like potholes and keeping all road users safe. Local authorities need long-term funding so they can plan maintenance and repairs with confidence."
