Delegates at the National Federation of Women’s Institutes’ (NFWI) Annual Meeting in Bournemouth today have voted to launch a national campaign calling for the Government and local authorities to address the decline in local bus services.
Darren Shirley, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport who addressed delegates at the conference, said:
"Buses are a lifeline, connecting people to education and jobs, shops and services, friends and family, so when they are cut the effects can be devastating. We hear heartbreaking tales of people left stranded by bus cuts, unable to access medical appointments, often isolated and lonely. This cannot go on. We are delighted that the WI, with its history of powerful and effective campaigning, has decided to focus on buses. We look forward to campaigning together with the WI for good bus services for every community."
