Say ‘No’ to new toxic Thames tunnel, urge campaigners

5 October 2015

Campaign for Better Transport is backing the resident-led ‘No to Silvertown Tunnel’ campaign and urges Londoners to say ‘No’ to this new Thames river crossing.

Transport for London’s (TfL) formal public consultation begins today into the building of the new road tunnel which will link the Greenwich Peninsula with Silvertown at a staggering cost of £1bn.

James MacColl, Head of Campaigns at Campaign for Better Transport, said:

“This new tunnel scheme is unwanted and unneeded so we are calling on Londoners to respond to this public consultation and reject TfL’s proposals to build another road crossing across the River Thames.

"The scandalous Silvertown Tunnel scheme will not help to relieve traffic on the existing crossings but will lead to more congestion and noise on the surrounding roads as well as increasing harmful emissions in a city already suffering from dangerous pollution levels.

"Now that we know who all the main parties' London Mayoral candidates are for the election next year, we ask them to oppose this expensive, toxic scheme when the money could be better spent on new rail, pedestrian and cycle connections which will link up the communities on either side of the river more economically and more sustainably.”

Members of the public can respond to the TfL consultation, which ends at midnight on Sunday 29 November 2015, here - Have your say
