£500m rail reopening fund announced - Campaign for Better Transport responds

6 January 2020

Welcoming the Government's announcement today of a £500 million fund to explore reopening former rail lines, Darren Shirley, chief executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said:

"This fund is something we have long campaigned for and is great news for communities up and down the country who have been cut off from the rail network for far too long. Good public transport links can reinvigorate whole areas and provide a much needed economic boost. Giving more people the option to choose the train will also help to reduce congestion and pollution caused by cars."
