Taxpayer-bankrolled Mersey Gateway Bridge sets a dangerous precedent

10 March 2014
Responding to the Government’s announcement of taxpayer funding for the Mersey Gateway Bridge, Stephen Joseph, Campaign for Better Transport’s chief executive, said:

“Campaign for Better Transport predicted this scheme would need to be bankrolled by the taxpayer as far back as 2011, but despite having featured in both the last Budget and the Autumn Statement, it has taken until now for the Government to admit this. This announcement sets a dangerous precedent as other local authorities and local enterprise partnerships may now think the Government will also bankroll their pet schemes, however poor value for money they are.”
