Rail tickets should be smart AND flexible

Responding to the roll-out of new technology which will make smart tickets available to more rail passengers, Darren Shirley, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said:

“The roll-out of smart ticketing has been woefully slow, but after years of promises it finally appears to be gathering pace and passengers may actually start to see some of the benefits. The rail industry now needs to ensure that passengers won't need dozens of smart cards or apps to benefit, whilst also getting to grips with providing more flexible tickets, including season tickets for part-time workers."
