Attempts to address the problem of first class and overcrowding in South Eastern consultation welcomed

14 March 2017

Responding to the launch by the Government of the public consultation into the new South Eastern franchise, Lianna Etkind, Public Transport Campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport, said:

“Overcrowding is a major problem and it can be galling to see people lounging comfortably in half empty first class carriages when you're crammed nose to armpit in cattle class every day, so addressing this on Southeastern would be welcome. We need to get more people off the congested roads and onto rail, and this means creating space on trains. Of course passengers will judge any changes by the results they experience, including asking whether these changes will be better than the rejected metro-style services Transport for London was proposing to run on suburban routes.”
