Campaign for Better Transport has joined calls for the Government to stop its policy of introducing all lane running, or so-called smart motorways, until the safety and environmental impacts have been fully investigated.
Bridget Fox, Sustainable Transport Campaigner for Campaigner for Better Transport, said: "Sacrificing the hard shoulder for all lane running simply generates more traffic and more pollution. There are also obvious safety concerns: the hard shoulder provides vital emergency access in the event of breakdowns and crashes.
"We are calling for a moratorium on rolling out the new generation of 'smart motorways’ until the environmental and safety impacts are fully understood. Getting more freight onto rail and providing people with good public transport alternatives is much better approach to managing traffic on motorways."
