Campaign for Better Transport responds to evidence given today, by the Transport Secretary, at the Transport Select Committee hearing into the performance of Network Rail, and the Government’s decision to "pause" key rail electrification projects.
Martin Abrams, Public Transport Campaigner, Campaign for Better Transport, said:
“The Transport Secretary has given no clear indication of how long the ‘pause’ in the planned electrification schemes will last and we must see a clear timetable for delivering this essential rail improvement work which will improve journey times and reliability.
It is also vital that Network Rail gets on with some upgrades right away to ensure the north of England gets the rail network it deserves.
The North of England continues to be the poor relation on transport investment and until Sir Peter Hendy’s report into Network Rail’s failings comes out in the autumn we are left with more questions than answers about what exactly has gone wrong.”
