Work to reverse Beeching gets underway

24 January 2013
Campaign for Better Transport has welcomed the establishment of a New Stations Fund by the Department for Transport.

Stephen Joseph, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport said

"It is excellent news that the Department for Transport is investing in new stations to serve communities not currently on the network. Fifty years after Dr Beeching predicted the death of the railways, we are seeing demand as high as it was in the 1920s. We need a railway that meets that demand not just through new stations but new lines, too."

Stephen Joseph continued

"Demand for new rail projects is such that we fully expect the new fund to be oversubscribed. If so, will be pressing for further money to be found."

Notes

Campaign for Better Transport has accepted an advisory role on the awards panel for the New Stations Fund. Other members include Department for Transport, Network Rail and the Association of Train Operating Companies. Local authorities, train operating companies and developers are being encouraged to apply for the funding which will go towards construction costs of building new stations.
