Bus cuts and fare rises will undermine sustainable transport funding

24 May 2012
Responding to the announcement of the next round of Local Sustainable Transport Fund schemes, Richard Hebditch, Campaign for Better Transport’s campaigns director, said:

“We welcome today’s announcement of another raft of projects through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund. This should give councils the money they need to make it easier for people to walk, cycle or use public transport. However, cuts in Government funding for bus services and above inflation rail fare rises will undermine the Fund's efforts to provide communities with greener transport choices.”

The Local Sustainable Transport Fund provides £560m over the next four years to fund local authority-led transport schemes that encourage walking, cycling and increased use of public transport. Campaign for Better Transport was one of the organisations that originally called for the fund to be established.
