Reacting to the Government's road plans, Campaign for Better Transport’s chief executive, Stephen Joseph, said:
"The Government’s plans announced today will hurt rather than help motorists. The danger of a national strategy that only focuses on trunk roads is that the other 94 per cent of the road network gets forgotten and "route enhancement strategies" will simply dump more traffic onto local roads. Building or expanding roads is financially and politically risky. The only way Government could make it attractive is to offer cast iron guarantees of private investor profits and this approach is, and always has been, bad news for taxpayers.”
