Responding to the announcement by Keith Williams today, Darren Shirley, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said:
“We welcome the recognition that passengers need to be at the heart of railway and agree that the current 'one size fits all' approach to franchising isn’t working.
“Rail can't exist in a bubble. Passengers, communities, local government and businesses need to be included in shaping the railways and the network needs to be more adaptable to local circumstances. Rail has huge economic benefits, as well as environmental ones, and can support housing growth and regional regeneration, but these benefits risk not being realised if rail doesn’t fit in with other forms of local transport to give people seamless door-to-door journeys.
“Keith William’s willingness to listen to a wide range of opinions is welcome, and we look forward to continuing our work with him and Williams' team to develop a way of managing the railway that delivers real and lasting benefits.”
