Campaigners respond to Government plans for Highways Agency

30 April 2014
Campaign for Better Transport has responded to Government plans to turn the Highways Agency into a Government Company (Go-Co)

Sian Berry, Roads Campaigner, Campaign for Better Transport said

"The Government’s desire to turn the Highways Agency into a commercial company raises big questions. There is a significant risk that giving the Agency more commercial freedom makes it less accountable to road users and communities affected by road building plans. Much of what Government says it wants would be better achieved without the expense and upheaval of reorganisation."

Sian Berry continued

"Some will question why Government is doing this at a time when the Agency's funding is being tripled, potentially locking-in highly questionable forecasts of increasing car use. Rather than making roads a special case, Government should be planning transport investment strategically and bringing together plans for road, rail, bus and other modes."

Notes

1. On 30 April, Government published details of how it will turn the Highways Agency into a government-owned company.

2. In December, Campaign for Better Transport set out its response to Government plans to turn the Highways Agency into a government-owned company.
