Campaign for Better Transport welcomed the Transport Committee's rail report. "Rail 2020". Chief Executive Stephen Joseph said:
"We welcome the Committee's report and especially its proposals on fares. The Government should take this opportunity to rule out introducing 'super-peak' fares to price people out of peak hour travel, and should instead implement the committee's proposals for more modern and flexible fares in its current fares review. The Committee is right to say that costs should be cut, but that this should not be at the expense of passengers or of station staff.
"We also welcome the Committee's proposals for franchising, with far more transparency on costs and funding, and with devolution of some services to local authorities."
Campaign for Better Transport has launched an online petition to get the Government to end above inflation fares rises. The petition is at http://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/fair-fares-now.
