'Root and branch' reform of fares welcomed

8 May 2018

Responding to the launch of a public consultation to seek ‘root and branch reform’ of fares and ticketing regulation, Steve Chambers, public transport campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport, said:

“We welcome this rail industry initiative. Root and branch reform of the rail fares system is long overdue, but it will need government support to make it happen and the quality of the public consultation will be key.

“We want to see the Government introduce flexible tickets for the large and growing army of part-time workers; options such as multimodal and zonal fares; and distance-based fares for intercity journeys. A simple, transparent fares system is essential to earn trust from passengers and attract new people to the railways.”
