Campaign for Better Transport welcomed today’s report by the Transport Select Committee which argues that there should be a clearer link between the Treasury and transport policy to assuage public mistrust in motoring taxes.
Richard George, the group’s roads and climate campaigner, said:
"The motoring lobby needs to accept that it has lost the argument that motoring taxes should only be spent on roads. We need a grown-up debate on transport taxation and spending. The Government must listen to this select committee and begin to spend a sizeable portion of motoring taxes on giving people real travel choices and breaking the cycle of car dependency."
