Siân Berry joins Campaign for Better Transport

7 June 2011
Siân Berry has been appointed as sustainable transport campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport.

The former London Mayoral candidate and founder of the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s will primarily work to influence the decisions on which major transport schemes will receive funding. Her role will be to try to ensure Government get these big decisions right by moving away from major road building schemes, which would add to congestion and damage the countryside, and prioritising more sustainable transport solutions instead.

Siân will also be working with local councils to help them address their future transport needs with more sustainable transport schemes.

Stephen Joseph, Campaign for Better Transport's chief executive, said: "We are delighted to be welcoming Siân to Campaign for Better Transport. It's great to have people of this calibre working for the organisation and we're looking forward to having her on board."

Siân Berry said: "I'm so pleased to be joining Campaign for Better Transport's excellent team. Improving transport by helping people and policy makers to make better choices about getting around has been a passion of mine for many years whilst working as a campaigner and politician. Now I'm looking forward to being able to concentrate on these issues full time."

Siân has been an active environmental campaigner for a number of years. She founded the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s, a national campaign to reduce the number of urban 4x4s, in 2003 and recently spearheaded the Reheat Britain campaign to replace inefficient boilers. She has also campaigned on a number of local issues including successfully lobbying for a higher London congestion charge for higher emission vehicles, advocating green redevelopment at the Kings Cross brownfield site and campaigning for better air quality in the capital. She is a published author and regular newspaper contributor.

Siân was the Green Party candidate for London Mayor in 2008. She will take up her post at Campaign for Better Transport on 22 June.
