Competition Commission findings welcomed

6 May 2011
Responding to the Competition Commission’s provisional findings report on the local bus market in the UK, Sophie Allain, Campaign for Better Transport’s bus campaigner, said:

“We welcome the Competition Commission’s direction of travel, especially the praise of multi-operator ticketing schemes, and giving the green light to local authorities to investigate options involving partnerships and franchising. This chimes with our view that co-operation and joined up thinking will provide passengers with a more usable door-to-door service and, if done properly, will not break competition rules.

“However, we will be asking the Commission to take a bolder approach to the issue of market growth. Evidence shows that where there are real incentives and investment in bus marketing, car use falls. We all know that we need people to get out of their cars and on to public transport, and this is an opportunity to encourage bus use that needs to be grasped with both hands.”
