Hammond should draw a line under expensive road schemes

26 October 2010
Responding to today's announcement by the Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond, stating which road schemes will receive funding and which will be subject to further review [1], Campaign for Better Transport's Road and Climate Campaigner, Richard George, said:

"Instead of drawing a line under these damaging road schemes, and helping find cheaper solutions, the Government wants councils to find more money to keep their road scheme alive [2]. The only realistic way these schemes can go ahead is if councils take an axe to their public services."

Notes to Editors

1. Philip Hammond’s announcement on road schemes.
2. All schemes announced today are subject to local authorities making better offers, by raising more money themselves. In practice, this will mean additional cuts to public services. The final decision will be made in January 2011.
