Transport 2000 challenges Government on road pricing plans

Campaign group Transport 2000 [1] has today challenged the Government to put improving public transport and tackling climate change at the centre of future road pricing plans.

Since 1997, the real cost of motoring has gone down while public transport costs have gone up [2], leaving many people without travel choices. In addition, the Government`s £12 billion road building programme is taking us in the wrong direction to tackle traffic congestion and climate change.[3]

Jason Torrance, Transport 2000’s campaigns director, said:

"Any future road pricing scheme needs to be preceded by investment in improving public transport as a means of tackling climate change. The Government must answer concerns about road pricing by committing to provide people with real travel choices with increased investment for public transport and sustainable travel measures."
