Rail fares rise will hurt people and planet

21 November 2008
Reacting to the rail fares rise announced today [1], Campaign for Better Transport called on the Government to rethink its policy on rail fares.

Stephen Joseph, the group’s executive director, said:

“At a time of economic hardship, the last thing the Government should be doing is imposing huge fares rises on hard-pressed families. The policy of making fare payers pay much more towards the railways will hurt commuters, communities and businesses and runs completely against the Government targets to tackle climate change. We need to see fares go down rather than up, to create an affordable railway that gives a real and green alternative to driving and flying.”
