At today's Labour Party conference, Ruth Kelly confirmed her intention to stand down as transport secretary. Responding to her speech, which summed up current Government transport policy, Stephen Joseph, executive director of Campaign for Better Transport, said:
"I'm glad Ruth Kelly announced Government support for rail electrification and new railway lines – these are urgent priorities. The £25 million kickstart funding for buses is good news, although it’s nowhere near enough – the cost of building a single road dwarfs this investment. However this speech reveals the inconsistency at the heart of Government transport policy: Kelly supported Heathrow expansion yet the third runway would undermine any carbon cuts made elsewhere. The next transport secretary should stand up to the business lobby and drop this disastrous project."
