Campaign for Better Transport is backing a bid to put outer London on the tube map by bringing London’s suburban rail routes under the management of London Underground operator, Transport for London (TfL).
The bid, which has been submitted to the Department for Transport, would see TfL take over the management and letting of contracts for various London rail services from the Department, starting with South East London suburban services, now part of the South Eastern Trains franchise.
If successful, the bid would effectively extend the current London Overground network to the capital’s outer suburbs, allowing for more frequent and reliable services, an extension of the Oyster card scheme, and a turn-up-and-go service for all disabled passengers across the network.
Lianna Etkind, Public Transport Campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport, said:
“We know passengers want frequent, reliable services; fairer, simpler fares: and modern, fully staffed stations. Since Transport for London took over London Overground services passenger satisfaction has increased and delays have been reduced by almost a third.
“London Overground is a success story we want to see replicated across the capital to ensure the city’s transport links can cope with its growing population and deliver economic benefits to more Londoners.
"The Government should accept TfL's offer and start the process next month to transfer south-east London services to London Overground and a decision is needed soon on the future South Eastern franchise."
