The PM is right to support reopening Ashford International station

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s response to a question about Eurostar, in which he said he is “keen to see international services reinstated to Ashford as soon as possible,” Michael Solomon Williams of Campaign for Better Transport said:

“The Prime Minister is right to support reopening Ashford International station, which would be a great boost for sustainable travel. If Government is serious about tackling the climate emergency, it has to prioritise international rail, which means reopening Ashford and Ebbsfleet, using Stratford International to expand services, and encouraging new operators into the tunnel, which is only at 40% capacity.”

Michael Solomon Williams added, “It was short-sighted of the UK Government of the time to have sold its stake in Eurostar in 2015, as it should always have remained involved in this joint project. But there is a real opportunity now to set up a UK-funded operator, or for the Government to reinvest in what should be a partnership.”
