Aviation is a climate problem. It is the most carbon-intensive form of transport and the most difficult to decarbonise.
At present, the aviation industry pays no fuel tax, and there are plans to expand several airports.
Government efforts to reduce aviation’s impact on the planet rely on cleaner fuels at some uncertain but certainly distant date in the future. The only way to reduce emissions from aviation now is to fly less.
We want to see emissions from aviation reduced now. To achieve this, we need:
“To help reduce carbon emissions from domestic aviation, we need to see Government policies which ensure rail is always the easier and cheaper than flying so that more people can choose the train over the plane.” Silviya Barrett, Director of Policy and Campaigns, Campaign for Better Transport
"I would like to have holidays in Wales and Cornwall by train but the fares can cost more than a flight to Europe! It's unfair that the lower carbon option is more expensive."
The cost of different forms of transport, both on their own and relative to each other, has a critical influence on whether and how people travel. People on low incomes…

Improving transport is about making people’s lives better. Wherever we live and whatever our circumstances, we should all be to get to where we need to go. No one should…
