As the country's leading transport charity, Campaign for Better Transport has worked since 1973 to improve transport, tackle climate change and create a more inclusive society.
Our campaigning over the years has ensured that public transport is now central to Government policy.
“I want public transport to play a greater role in national life, becoming the easiest, most attractive choice.”
– Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander, reflecting our campaigning
Over the years, we have helped defeat plans to close large portions of the rail network and persuaded the Government to start the Restoring Your Railway Fund to reopen lines and stations.
We have secured other Government funding pots for sustainable transport, too. The Local Sustainable Transport Fund, the New Stations Fund, the Highways England environment funds and many more have owed their existence to our campaigning.
We have moved buses way up the political agenda and secured vital funds for them, as well as playing a big part in making the government recognise cyclists and pedestrians as part of the transport mix. And we helped reform some transport taxes, including disincentivising polluting company cars.
We have also helped thousands of local campaigners oppose bus cuts and destructive road building.
In recent years, we successfully campaigned for a cap on bus fares, and saved London’s Day Travelcard from extinction. We helped to get rail fares frozen, and we are improving bus stops, with better information and better shelters coming across the country.
You can read about our more recent successes in our 2025-26 impact report.
Since the Foundation for Integrated Transport (FIT) was founded in 2014, it has financially supported Campaign for Better Transport’s work. In early 2026, FIT’s trustees commissioned an external review to evaluate the key impacts of our work. The review found that we delivered real and positive impact, helping improve how people get around in the UK.
"We are a small charity making a big difference but we rely on your donations to continue our work."
We want to see more tram and light rail schemes around the country to help deliver a sustainable transport network for everyone. It’s time for trams!
