NO to Oxford-Cambridge expressway, say campaigners

Campaign for Better Transport responds to today’s publication of the Government’s Oxford to Cambridge expressway strategic study.
The new study sets out the case for the Oxford to Cambridge expressway creating a dual carriageway from the M1 at Milton Keynes and the M40 near Oxford.
Bridget Fox, Sustainable Transport Campaigner, Campaign for Better Transport said:
“This is a disappointing return to the ‘predict and provide’ policies of the past.
“Creating new homes and new jobs in this area need not require massive new road construction in the countryside, with motorway style routes excluding cyclists and bus users.
“Plans for East-West Rail give an opportunity to embrace truly sustainable development for the 21st century.
“Oxford and Cambridge have pioneered transport policies based on providing alternatives to car dependency. To build new road connections drawing more traffic into the area risks undermining their achievements.”
