Business travel toolkit launched as part of Better Transport Week

16 June 2023

Campaign for Better Transport is launching a toolkit to help businesses reduce their corporate travel carbon footprint at the Federation of Small Businesses today (16 June) to mark ‘Business Day’ of Better Transport Week.

The leading transport charity will launch Better Transport for Better Business – which aims to advise businesses on how to decarbonise transport, from employee commutes to travel between meetings – at a business industry event which will bring together business organisations, transport operators and innovators to highlight the key role that public transport and active travel play in improving business.

Presenters and panellists will discuss topics ranging from zero-carbon commuting to cargo bikes for business. Attendees will hear from Silviya Barrett, Director of Policy and Research at Campaign for Better Transport; David Tucker, Chair of the Transport Policy Unit at Federation of Small Businesses; Ali Clabburn, Founder and Chairman of Mobilityways; Sharon Kindleysides, Chief Executive Officer at CILT (UK); Ben Lee, Strategic Partnerships Lead at Beryl; Olivier Rousseau, Chief Executive Office at Pedal Me; and Oliver Lord, Head of Strategy & UK, Clean Cities Campaign.

After the presentations, attendees will head to Westminster Town Hall for photos with a convoy of cargo bikes, which will ride through central London to launch Cargo Revolution’s new campaign which urges local authorities to switch to cargo bikes for services such as litter cleaning, keeping parks tidy, and doing maintenance to council estates.

Silviya Barrett from Campaign for Better Transport said:

“We are thrilled to bring together such a range of voices from across the business and transport sectors to discuss how improving transport and active travel can improve business. From cycle to work schemes, to taking the train to meetings, businesses have a key role to play in decarbonising their transport. This is why we’ve launched our new business toolkit, to advise businesses on where to start with greening their transport.”

Martin McTague, National Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said:

“It’s welcome to see Campaign for Better Transport promote awareness on reducing transport emissions. Small businesses recognise their role in this space with the majority taking action to reduce transport-related carbon emissions, whether that is through increased cycling or walking, or using more public transport. There’s a need for better transport connectivity for small firms, especially those in rural areas, to boost business growth and accelerate our journey to net zero.”

Ali Clabburn, from Mobilityways, said:

“The commute is the largest source of emissions for many employers and it’s a huge expense for employees. However, 90% of commuters have more sustainable, lower cost travel options available.  All businesses will benefit from helping their staff to discover these better travel options.”

“Mobilityways are delighted to be supporting Better Transport Week. It’s a great opportunity to highlight some of the amazing work that employers are doing and raise awareness of the many helpful tools there are to help all businesses to measure and reduce commute emissions, such as the free ACEL calculator on the Mobilityways website.”

Oliver Lord, Clean Cities campaigner and Cargo Revolution spokesperson said:

“Cities across the UK are grappling with toxic air and the only way out is an end to diesel. Cargo bikes are a zippy, clean, quiet and efficient alternative to polluting vans in urban areas so we’re delighted to join Better Transport Week to champion businesses making the switch and to launch our brand new charter for local authorities, leading the way to a Cargo Revolution.”

The event is part of Better Transport Week, which runs from 12 to 18 June and aims to promote the wide range of benefits of public transport, shared mobility, walking and cycling to the public and encourage more people to travel sustainably.

The week-long celebration of sustainable transport has been launched by Campaign for Better Transport to celebrate its 50th year of campaigning.
