Transport innovation in action: Manchester’s Bee Network

27 January 2023

27 January 2023

On Tuesday (24 January), Campaign for Better Transport visited Manchester as part of the organisation’s 50th anniversary tour of transport innovation. In 2023 Greater Manchester will become the first region outside London to introduce bus franchising, bringing buses into the integrated and ground-breaking Bee Network.

Norman Baker of Campaign for Better Transport said:
“In our 50th year of campaigning we want to celebrate how transport is transforming our cities. In 1974 our organisation campaigned for a single transport system for London, this became what is now Transport for London. Now, Manchester’s Bee Network will be the first integrated transport system of its kind in 40 years. It’s fantastic to see how this will benefit Manchester, and the potential for it to be replicated elsewhere.”

Norman Baker and Michael Solomon Williams were given a tour of the Manchester Metrolink, the most extensive light rail network in the UK, by Alex Cropper and Daniel Vaughan of Transport for Greater Manchester, hearing how transformative the network has been for Manchester’s economy.

The visit was rounded off by meetings with senior leadership at Transport for Greater Manchester to learn about plans and priorities for the busy year ahead.
