Campaigners ‘disappointed’ at green lit roads and airport expansion
Responding to the Government giving the ‘green light’ to 21 major infrastructure projects, Ben Plowden, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport said:
“We are disappointed the Government has given the go-ahead for the Lower Thames Crossing and expansion at Gatwick and Luton airports. Building new roads increases carbon emissions and fails to relieve congestion, and expanding airports simply leads to more climate damaging flights.
“It’s hard to see how these decisions are consistent with the urgent need to decarbonise transport in meeting our climate goals.
“Seventy per cent of trips are under five miles, so rather than fast tracking low-return, carbon intensive roads and bigger airports, the Government should be aiming to deliver long-term green growth by focusing on local transport improvements, prioritising high-return public transport projects and investing in our rail network.”
