Compulsory purchase orders for housebuilding must come with public transport guarantee
Responding to the news that landowners will face compulsory purchase orders in order to help meet new Government housing targets, Michael Solomon Williams, from Campaign for Better Transport, said:
“Councils and public bodies should only be granted compulsory purchase orders if they guarantee that new developments will be built around new or existing public transport networks, and not encourage car use.”
Campaign for Better Transport has previously warned that new housing developments which have little or no public transport links are forcing people into expensive car ownership and making communities car dependent. The transport charity wrote to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner on 25 July to reiterate its concerns and urge her to ensure revised planning guidance contains a duty to locate all future developments near existing or planned public transport networks to reduce the need for cars wherever possible.
