Reaction: Climate Change Committee report

8 December 2009

8 December 2009
Campaign for Better Transport welcomed the Climate Change Committee’s report on aviation released today [Tuesday] but called on the Government to focus on modal shift to rail instead of hoping for technological breakthroughs.

Stephen Joseph, the group’s executive director, said

“The Committee on Climate Change might not want to get involved in the debate on Heathrow’s expansion but it’s clear from their report that the airline industry will have to choose between either expanding in Heathrow and the South East or expanding in the rest of the country. Even the most optimistic expectations of the cuts in CO2 from technology will be wiped out if the Government allows airports to expand and demand to just keep on rising.”

Get on board

I care about transport. I don’t want a future of traffic jams and dirty air. I want the Government to back public transport for a greener, fairer transport future. Please send me campaign actions and updates by email.
