Decisive action needed to reduce transport emissions in wake of CCC report
Responding to the publication of the latest Climate Change Committee Progress in reducing emissions 2026 report to Parliament, Silviya Barrett, Director of Policy and Research at Campaign for Better Transport, said:
“The impacts of climate change are being felt now, making the timing of this report stark. While accelerating electric vehicle uptake is vital, rising emissions driven by increased car use make the case crystal clear: we cannot meet our climate goals without reducing car dependency. To cut emissions, boost energy security and put money back in people’s pockets, we need a national target to shift more journeys to public transport, walking, cycling and shared travel, alongside electrifying buses and rail, and sticking firmly to the ZEV mandate.
“The Government must fulfil its pre-election commitment to set a modal shift target – as exists in Wales – alongside decisive action to deliver it.”
