Devolution “can transform transport networks”
31 July 2026
Commenting on the announcement of a transfer of power and funding to mayors, Silviya Barrett of Campaign for Better Transport said:
“We welcome this move to give more powers and funding flexibility to local leaders. We have seen in places like Manchester how devolution can transform transport networks, improving lives, increasing opportunities and growing local economies. But different places are at very different stages of the devolution journey, and not everywhere has the personnel or the transport expertise of Manchester. If devolution is to address regional inequality, there needs to be a parallel drive to increase capacity and capability in local areas so that all can benefit from better transport.”
