Government go-ahead for rail freight and passenger upgrades on East Coast Main Line welcomed

25 July 2018

25 July 2018

The Department for Transport approval yesterday of the works to provide a rail freight flyover at Werrington Junction, north of Peterborough, will enable more freight services to use the Great Northern Great Eastern Line (GNGE) freeing up space on a very busy section of the East Coast Main Line.

Philippa Edmunds, Freight on Rail Manager at Campaign for Better Transport, said:

“The Werrington junction upgrade will improve capacity for both freight and passenger services between London, Eastern England, the North East, Yorkshire and Scotland. This upgrade will open up the route from Peterborough to Doncaster via Lincoln for more freight services which will further reduce road congestion, road fatalities and pollution. Longer term we would like to see it electrified.”

Notes to editors

1) The scheme will allow freight trains to transfer between the GNGE (also known as the Joint Line) and the East Coast Main Line without freight traffic needing to cross the ECML. The scheme is funded through the CP5 East Coast Connectivity Fund and is due to be completed in 2021.
