Integrated Local Transport Roundtable in Manchester marks Better Transport Week

14 June 2023

Campaign for Better Transport is holding a local transport roundtable at the Arup offices in Manchester, on Wednesday 14 June, as part of Better Transport Week.

Marking ‘Local Transport Day’, the session will explore the importance of integrated transport systems and what lessons can be learned from Transport for Greater Manchester’s ongoing expansion of the Bee Network.

Attendees will include Silviya Barrett, Director of Policy and Research at Campaign for Better Transport; Thomas Ableman, Director of Strategy and Innovation at Transport for London; Sandeep Shingadia, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Delivery Integration at Transport for West Midlands (TfWM); Matt Smallwood, Connected Mobility Manager at Transport for the North; David Sidebottom, Director of Transport Focus; and Pete Abel from Manchester Friends of the Earth.

The roundtable will be followed by a photo call at Manchester Piccadilly Station at the station’s Brompton Bike hire dock, to promote Better Transport Week’s ‘Ride to Rail’ competition. Campaign for Better Transport is asking rail passengers to share a photo on Twitter with the hashtag #betterlocaltransport or submit a photo to the charity’s website showing that they have cycled to their train station. Ten winners, selected at random, will all win a bike helmet donated by Lime.

The event is part of Better Transport Week, which runs from 12 to 18 June and aims to promote the wide range of benefits of public transport, shared mobility, walking and cycling to the public and encourage more people to travel sustainably.

The week-long celebration of sustainable transport has been launched by Campaign for Better Transport to celebrate its 50th year of campaigning.

Silviya Barrett, from Campaign for Better Transport, said: “At the very beginning of Campaign for Better Transport, we advised on the formation of Transport for London; a world-class example of an integrated transport system that works. We’re thrilled to be hosting this session in our 50th anniversary year and are excited to hear how other devolved authorities are following Manchester’s direction to build well-integrated transport systems that will transform their cities and the lives of people living in them.”
